Gozo commemorates 214th anniversary of island’s liberation

Gozo Day was celebrated on Sunday, commemorating the 214th anniversary of when Gozo was liberated from the French occupation in 1798, as a result of which for a 22-month period, Gozo gained complete autonomy under the leadership of Archpriest Saverio Cassar.

The ceremony, which was organised by the Gozo Regional Council, was attended by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono.

The St Margaret Band of Sannat played festive band marches from Independence Square up to the Cathedral Square. This was follwed a by thanksgiving Mass at the Cathedral.

The band continued in Independence Square after the Mass, when the ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths in front of the monument of Archpriest Saver Cassar who led the Gozitan revolution against the French.

Victoria Mayor, Samuel Azzopardi gave a commemorative speech for the occasion.

Both the Victoria and Xaghra Scout Groups also took part in the commemoration
