A seminar was organised in Gozo on diabetes on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, which was celebrated on Wednesday. The seminar was aimed at raising awareness of this condition and and how to manage it, while also promoting good practices that could be instrumental in preventing diabetes.
Gozitan children who regularly attend the outpatient department for diabetes treatment at the Gozo General Hosptial were invited to attend the event.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, who was present for the seminar, praised the initiative whereby Gozo, for the third consecutive year, had joined so many people around the world to celebrate this day.
Diabetes affects approximately 10% of the population of Malta and the Minister said that services related to diabetes are provided by consultants and a medical team at the Gozo Hospital, which is reinforced if necessary, by regular appointments with consultants and specialist nurses at Mater Dei Hospital.
During the seminar presentations were given by several consultants, as well as the participation of members of the audience who were able to describe their personal experiences with diabetes.+
The Citadel was illuminated in blue for the evening as part of the Blue Monument Challenge during which national main monuments and buildings were lit in blue (the colour of the diabetes blue circle) in several countries.
Various photographers from the participating countries use the occassion to obtain unique shots of historic buildings in blue. These are then shared on various diabetes sites and related social media pages.
