Six of the thirteen pieces of artwork that were commissioned by the Ministry for Gozo, as artistic sculptures in public spaces have been installed in a number of places around the island.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono visited two of the commissioned pieces that were recently put in place. The Minister said that the scheme was launched by the Ministry for Gozo in December 2010 as an initiative related to the implementation of the first eco-Gozo Action Plan 2010-2012. “Besides creating an opportunity to further embellished Gozo public areas, this scheme also aims to promote local creativity and artistic talent.”
Public art pieces that have been installed recently include one by London born artist, Paolo Giordanella, who now lives and works in Gozo. He has had his 15ft sculpture of a giant Grasshopper erected at St Celia heliport roundabout in Ghajnsielem. The artist designed the contemporary sculpture, which belies its solid metal fabrication of stainless steel, copper and brass to compliment the Gozitan landscape.
The sculpture by Gozitan artist Nicholette Vella – ‘U?u? – Poplu,’ proposes a completely different style. The work was executed on local stone and has been carved on the various surfaces, this stands near the entrance to the bus terminus in Victoria, an area which has recently undergone extensive landscaping, the Ministry said.
These two works of public art follow others already placed, ‘The Menhir’ working with pottery produced by Kathleen Formosa installed at the Three Hills Gardens in Marsalforn, ‘Gozo Gossiping’ a sculpture in limestone by Joe Xuereb and ‘Serenity,’ a work in bronze by Maltese artist Angelo Agius. Both of these are installed in the Villa Rundle gardens in Victoria. The other one is ‘Mer?ba bil-fjuri – Welcome to Gozo,’ a ceramic mosaic by Mary Portelli, which is at the Mgarr road near the ferry terminal.
64 artists participated in the Public Arts Scheme, from both Gozo and Malta, as well as foreigners residing in the islands, which together submitted 120 draft proposals. Out of these 43 were selected.
