At around 6.00p.m yesterday evening, the Operations Centre of the Armed Forces of Malta was informed that a woman of foreign nationality was missing and that her last known position was somewhere near Xlendi Cliffs, limits of Munxar.

Searches conducted earlier by the Gozo Police and members of the civil protection had been unsuccessful in locating the woman in view of the darkness. The search was further hampered by the heavy winds.

The AFM immediately sent an Alouette III Helicopter to the area to try and locate the woman. After a search of around 20 minutes the woman, a Belgian, was located thanks also to the vigorous waving of her luminous mobile phone.

The woman’s position was subsequently communicated to the civil protection operators and the police following which, members of the Civil Protection Department hoisted the woman to safety.
