The small village of San Lawrenz in Gozo, is to be transformed into a cradle to welcome in a different way, the birth of Christ, during Twieled fi Djarna, which is taking place on Sunday, the 23rd and Monday, the 24th of December.

The 43rd edition of the annual Christmas Pageant will this year be a completely new version on the occasion of the ‘Year of Faith’ and aims to rekindle the light of the Babe of Betlehem in every house in the village.

The small community of San Lawrenz will be opening its doors from where biblical characters, who form part of your history of salvation will exit. The story of each biblical character will mingle with that of each family, while the particular identity of the village of San Lawrenz, will offer an idyllic background to relive the greatest story ever told culminating in the birth of Christ.

Those who are present in the main square and streets of San Lawrenz, during one of the two evenings, to follow “Twieled fi Djarna” will not just be spectators, but will become participants of this unique celebration.

The audience will be one with the prophets, the Roman soldiers and centurions, the shepherds of Bethlehem and with every other character that “made straight the alleys and prepared the way for the Lord.”

The Parish of San Lawrenz said that “the unique identity of this small village, guarantees a very particular Christmas to all those present. San Lawrenz will shed all signs of materialism and vest itself with a message of simplicity.”

For this special event, the village will turn off electrical lighting and offer a spectacle of candle lights. The message to convey is that of experiencing the light which illuminated the grotto of Bethlehem, two thousand years ago. “Today, this same light will illuminate our houses, from where we will be asking Christ to illuminate our hearts and our homes.”

The event on Sunday, the 23rd of December starts at 6.30pm to allow Maltese visitors to return back to Malta with the 8.45pm ferry. On Monday, the 24th of December the event starts at 7.30pm.

“Both performances are inviting Maltese and Gozitans alike to live the true spirit of Christmas. The same spirit of joy and happiness announced by the angels in Betlehem and lived by our forefathers.

“The spirit of peace and tranquillity which will flow from the homes of families in San Lawrenz into the lives of all those who accept this special invite, the Parish concluded.

The Pageant has been organised by the San Lawrenz Parish in collaboration with the San Lawrenz Local Council and National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.
