Update 2: The Ghaqda Partecipanti Karnival in a statement this morning said that it has officially made a request to the Government to move Carnival 2013 from February to April in light of the current political situation.
The appeal has been sent to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Environment and the Maltese Council for Culture.
So that the annual celebrations are not held in the middle of the electoral campaign, the Association has proposed the alternative date of between the 5th and 9th of April, which follows the Easter celebrations.
The Association said that, while it believes Carnival activities should be held at the traditional time of the year, in 2013 it could possibly clash with the political parties events, causing logistical problems such as security and also overshadow the Carnival activities.
Update: PN said in a statement, that the Carnival should be celebrated at the traditional time and it should be the political associations that work with the carnival tradition and not the other was around.
The PN said that it would ease off its political activities at carnival time so as to allow the public to enjoy Carnival as a family, a tradition of the Maltese culture.
“It will not be the first time the Carnival has taken place during an electoral campaign, such as in 2003 when the PN also halted its political activities. The PN party hoped that the opposition would agree with this decision.”
Update 2: The PL Party said in a statement this afternoon that is had no objection to the moving of Carnival dates, however, it would take whatever actions necessary should the dates remain the same.
