45,492 operations were carried out at Mater Dei Hospital during 2012, Health Minister Joe Cassar said this morning, during a visit to the National Blood Transfusion Service.

The Minister said that this was an increase of 1,745 operations on 2011 and an increase of 12,000 operations on the last year of procedures at St Luke’s Hospital. He said that these figures do not include those operations that were carried out in private hospitals through the Public Private Partnership scheme.

Dr Cassar met some of those who were at the unit to donate blood, thanking them, saying that it was important blood donations continue, for without donors operations could not take place and lives would be put at risk.
