The Leader of the Labour Party, Dr Joseph Muscat said today, “I wish to live to see that day when a Labour supporter will celebrate Independence Day as much as a Nationalist supporter and a Nationalist supporter will celebrate Freedom Day as much as a Labour supporter, for these are not any particulary party’s celebrations, but a single nation’s celebration, because Malta belongs to us all.”
He expressed this hope during a visit to all the monuments dedicated to national celebrations; the Freedom Day monument in Vittoriosa, the Independence monument in Floriana and the monuments dedicated to Republic Day, the Great Siege and Sette Gugnio in Valletta.
“We are visiting these national monuments because the events commemorated by them belong to all of us and we should all celebrate them with the dignity they deserve,” stated Joseph Muscat
“Our country’s history is what has established our identity, but throughout history there were various instances when people were hurt. Labour supporters suffered in the 60s while Nationalist supporters suffered in the 80s. I can never condone these events thus I condemn them, when we reflect about it, we realize how much we have hurt each other needlessly.
“Now, I am appealing to all Maltese people to write a new page in our history books,” concluded the leader of the Labour Party.
