The St. James Artist in Residence Programme is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Silvia Camporesi, one of the most interesting Italian contemporary artists on the international scene. As part of this residency, the artist realised a special project for this exhibition, entirely produced on the island of Gozo.
‘2112,’ an exhibition by Silvia Camporesi, is curated by Irene Biolchini. SIlvia Camporesi is the winner of Premio Celeste 2006.
This work will exhibited alongside other video and photographic work at St James Cavalier in January and February 2013.
The title of the exhibition, 2112, is a reference to the supposed end of the world. On the 21st of December 2012, the day the world should have ended, Silvia Camporesi walked around the island of Gozo, trying to register what was going on during that important day. Camporesi’s video is a tribute to this quietness. Everything is static in the video, only the sea moves. Looking at the video we can perceive the time passing, waiting for something that will never happen.
The video, presented for the first time at St. James Cavalier, is part of an extended project. More than twenty photographs, taken during the video shooting will be presented at St. James Cavalier and, after the exhibition, will be collected in a book entitled The island. The book is a tribute to Cesare Pavese and his text The Island, a dialogue in which he tries to analyse the relationship between Ulysses and Calypso.
In addition to this special project, the artist will present three videos, realised during the last six years and conceived as a reflection on the human body. For the first time Camporesi’s trilogy is exhibited in the same space, allowing the spectator to understand the file rouge of these videos.
The exhibition will be followed by two other special meetings. From the 1st to the 3rd of February, Camporesi will hold a Workshop at St. James Cavalier which focuses on the themes of art photography and the artistic process. The workshop aims to understand and elaborate on the modus operandi that lies behind each artwork. On the 1st of February, before the workshop, the artists will meet the public in a discussion focusing on the exhibition.
