Etienne Micallef, the Secretary General of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps in Gozo, recently attended a meeting of international Samaritan organisations in Koln Germany, where he addressed a group of disaster managers with regards to the plan to develop common response modules in civil protection and exchange programmes for volunteers.

The European Samaritan organisations plan to develop common response modules in civil protection and exchange programmes for volunteers.

Representatives of seven international Samaritan organisations met at the Cologne head office of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) to prepare a cooperation in civil protection.

The meeting’s objective was to get closer acquainted with the national structures of the partner associations and the civil protection system of the neighbouring European countries.

Jointly with the Samaritan organisations from Italy (White Cross, ANPAS), Austria (ASBÖ), Slovakia (ASSR), Poland (SFOP) and from Gozo, Malta (ERRC) the ASB aims to set up civil protection modules for international emergencies.

The dedicated volunteers in the civil protection area of Samaritan organisations will have the opportunity to take part in exchange programmes to be financed within the framework of an EU funded Grundtvig learning partnership.

The first ideas for the implementation of the project have already been developed in Cologne, such as a simulation exercise in Austria as well as a diving and water rescue exercise in Gozo, Malta
