In April 2008, the Retail Price Index went up by 0.37 per cent over the previous month. This primarily reflected an increase of 2.77 per cent in the Clothing and Footwear Index, mainly due to seasonal price rises in garments.

The Housing Index went up by 1.22 per cent, mainly on account of various costlier construction works.

Higher prices for air transport services and fuels underlay an increase of 0.70 per cent in the Transport and Communication Index.

The Water, Electricity, Gas and Fuels Index registered an upward shift of 0.69 per cent, brought about by an increase in the price for kersosene.

Price rises in school fees and private tuition caused the Recreation and Culture Index to increase by 0.62 per cent.

The Other Goods and Services Index went up by 0.29 per cent, mainly on account of price increases in pet food and pet-related services.

The Household Equipment and House Maintenance Cost Index increased by 0.26 per cent. This was mainly brought about by price rises in household appliances.

A decrease of 0.62 per cent was recorded in the Food Index, mainly on account of lower vegetables prices.

In April the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 2.25 per cent, whereas the annual rate stood at 3.56 per cent.
