Dr Joseph Muscat has been elected as the new leader of the Malta Labour Party after gaining 574 of the delegates votes in the second round of the election for the new leader of the MLP.
In the first round of the election, Joseph Muscat emerged as the absolute favourite, with 435 votes out of 875 valid votes, only three votes short of an absolute majority.
Dr Muscat’s election closes the final chapter of the 2008 General Elections, which created the vacancy when Labour leader Alfred Sant resigned.
Elected on a commitment to lead a “winning generation,” Dr Muscat’s first and foremost task will be to unite a party which by its own analysis was shown to be rife with division.
