The Federation of Public Transport Associations strike went ahead as expected this morning, currently the Gozo Bus Owners Association have not joined in the strike and Gozo buses are running to their normal schedule.

The Federation have said that they will strike indefinitely unless the government withdraws the new licences issued for the operation of hearses.

Meanwhile, the Government have reiterated that their decision to liberalise the hearse market is final and that they will not enter into any discussions with the Federation unless the strike is called off.

Public transport workers are reported to have gathered with their vehicles in various locations, prompting fears that they may be intending to block main roads, thus compounding the effect of the strike.

The Health Department had previously arranged alternative transport for staff at hospitals, health centres and residences for the elderly. This transport is being made available from police stations and parish churches. The Health Department has also appealed to those who use private transport to help as many of their colleagues as possible.
