A group of Post-Secondary Students from the Sir M.A. Refalo Centre for Further Studies in Victoria, recently visited the Centre for Innovation Rural Sciences and Environmental Management (CIRSEM) in Xewkija. The students are all taking courses on Geography and Environmental Studies.

This visit was part of the programme of activities in connection with the European Union project Simbiotic (Sicily-Malta Biogeographical Transboundary Insular Connectivity). The project proposes to strengthen planning and management and to serve as a pilot project for the restoration of degraded habitats in Gozo and of a system of south eastern Sicilian Natura 2000 protected coastal wetlands of primary natural and European community importance.

On Gozo, the main aim of the project is to rehabilitate the natural stepping stones of Mediterranean maquis habitat in the islands’ agricultural landscape so as to enhance the ecological connectivity of the transboundary area.

The programme of activites for the students included a presentation about the project and the actions being taken in Gozo. The group were also given to the opportunity to visit a specific location at CIRSEM where habitat restoration is being practised.

Before returning to school, the students visited Ta’ Lambert area at Xewkija which is included in the project, together with it-Taksis and Ta’ Ghammar.
