Inauguration of IL-HAGAR – HEART OF GOZO

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi on Saturday, February 23, inaugurated IL-HAGAR – HEART OF GOZO, the ERDF-supported Museum-cum-Cultural Centre bang in the centre of Victoria by St George’s Basilica, festively bedecked.

Dr Gonzi was met by Mgr Joseph Farrugia (Curator and Coordinator) and Antoine Vassallo (Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria Chair). After the National Anthem from La Stella Band, the Chapter of canons – including Archpriest Paul Cardona and Bishop Mario Grech – emerged from the main portals of the Basilica. The 5th of March 2013 edition of the Maltese Herald Mr Vassallo, Project Leader, delivered a short welcome address giving an overview of the vision that spurred the numerous volunteers: to provide a state-of-the-art site which does justice to the substantial horde of paintings, statues and other artefacts. In particular he mentioned the innovative central stack showing the stream of cultures which resulted in the present people and the interactivity element.

Before cutting the traditional ribbon, Dr Gonzi emphasised the national character of this development and the support being offered to the voluntary sector to enter such ventures. Mgr Grech then expressed his whole-hearted participation in this new evangelization vehicle and made the blessing.

Before being led through the various sections on the three floors, Dr Gonzi unveiled a marble plaque commemorating the event. The scores of guests continued to the roof for refreshments, expressing their wonder at the view and at the quality achieved.

The clebratory programme also included a monument on the tercentenary of proto-historian De Soldanis, a concert by Cappella Sistina, a Pontifical thanksgiving Mass and a dinner.
