The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association has “expressed its satisfaction at the appointment of Karmenu Vella as Minister for Tourism and wishes him well in his new position.”

Commenting on this appointment Tony Zahra President of the MHRA said that, “Mr Karmenu Vella is no stranger to the industry having successfully held this post between 1996 and 1998. With an excellent track record in the area of Tourism and having been involved for many years in the industry, it is very appropriate and correct that the Tourism industry which represents over 30% of Malta’s GDP and 35% of Government income should have a person like Mr Vella as Minister, given that tourism is the most important pillar of our economy.

“We extend our congratulations to Mr Vella on this new appointment and feel confident that this move will help to ensure that 2013 will be another record year for tourist arrivals to Malta.

“To return the hotel industry to a sustainable level , MHRA have been campaigning for an increase in winter and shoulder arrivals, a reduction of 4 cents per kilowatt in energy tariffs, and a reduction of vat to 5% from the hiked up 7%,” Tony Zahara concluded.
