Nature Trust (Malta) said in a statement this evening that it is “very concerned on recent reports it received of burnt oil dumped over the Tal-Mara cliffs in the South of Malta.”
The NGO said that these cliffs, like most other rupestral habitats, host various indigenous and endemic plants species which include our national plant – Cheirolophus crassifolius (Widnet il-Bahar; Maltese Rock Centaury), together with Darniella melitensis (Xebb; Maltese Salt Tree), Chremnophyton lanfrancoi (Bjanka tal-irdum; Maltese Cliff Orache) and less restricted endemics such as Limonium melitensis (Limonju ta’ Malta; Maltese Sea-Lavender) and the subendemic Siculo-Maltese Jacobaea maritima subsp. sicula (Silvery Ragwort: Kromb il-Bahar Isfar).
The non-governmental environment organisation appeals to the public to report any information regarding this oil spill to the police and urges the police to investigate the matter to apprehend the culprits of such an ecological disaster. Rupestral habitats are protected by Legal Notice 311 of 2006.
The report was first raised on the NGO Facebook Group.
If the worthless piece of excrement who caused this damage had the time and means to cart the oil to the cliff edge, then he certainly could have taken it to the nearest recycling depot!
When will these dregs of humanity learn that pollution is forever, it might be washed off the cliffs and become invisible, but it will continue to pollute one way or another for eternity.
Such people do not deserve to inhabit such a beautiful archipelago!
Sad reflection on a national attitude ….governments can talk the talk on environmental protection i.e. earth hour, eco Gozo etc but if individuals can’t walk the walk what is the point? This is just one dramatic example of Eco ignorance but one can also look at unnecessary over development, bird trapping, excessive energy consumption, litter, fly tipping, hunting, water wastage etc etc
And it is so easy to go to the bring – in -site !
