Sharklab-Malta is organising a fundraising fun day for all the family, ‘Shark Fete,’ which will take place at Golden Bay on Saturday. The event will include a shark exhibition, as well as talks and multimedia shows that will be held at the H20 dive centre.

Sharklab-Malta is undertaking many different activities to try and play a part in making a difference for Elasmobranch (Sharks, Rays, Skates and Chimaeras), whose numbers have been on a downward spiral. Sharklab said, “we, as the human species, need to change our perception of these animals. They are not the big-mouthed, slashing toothed man-eaters so often portrayed in the media. They are critical, amazing, diverse, spectacular and misunderstood. They need to be appreciated and understood for the roles they play in our waters, here around Malta and across the globe.”

‘Shark Fete’ activities, which will take place between 10am and 4pm, include guided snorkelling for adults, an activity corner for all ages, face painting, a sandcastle competition, face painting , a shark and sponges activity, a kids’ waterside adventure walk, a raffle and a bouncy castle.

This event is being made possible with the support of H2O Divers, and all monies raised will go towards the research work Sharklab-Malta is doing around the Maltese Islands.

‘Shark Fete’ is also supported by Ocean Mysteries Diving, L’Escargot Bistro, Salpa Sub, Scuba Systems, AquaVenture, Dive Systems, Diveshack, Emmanuel Delicata Winemaker and Gary’s Gift Shop in Mellieha.

Sharklab-Malta is an NGO and a non-profit voluntary organisation dedicated to research, education and raising greater awareness about all Elasmobranch.

Sharklab-Malta is determined to make a difference and turn the tide for these magnificent and important apex predators. “Without Elasmobranch in our waters, not only will we never see them return, but we will also change the way the whole fragile and balanced marine ecosystem works.”

Sitting as apex predators, at the top of the food chain, these species play a critical role for all species of marine life.
