The Government said in a statement today that “the worrying results obtained in the EU Justice Scoreboard reinforced its will to reform this sector effectively and on time.”

The statement said that although certain aspects compared well with those of other European countries, the Government believed that the island’s citizens, democracy and business and investment sectors deserved a more efficient justice system.

In the EU Justice scoreboard Malta currently ranked among the countries with the longest period for cases to be resolved. The scoreboard also showed negative results with reference to information facilities regarding monitoring and evaluation of Court activities, as well as the resources allocated to the Courts.

The Government statement said that it was aware of this reality and had already annouced that it had set up a Commission for the Holistic Revision of the Justice Sector, headed by Judge Emeritus Giovanni Bonello.

The Government pledged to implement reforms by the end of this year.
