Promoting workers mobility across EuropeThe Employment and Training Corporation and the European Employment Service (EURES) in Malta organised the annual European Job Days fair. This fair was held simultaneously in over 200 cities across Europe. The purpose of the European Job Days are to promote workers’ mobility across Europe. EURES Malta, which operates within ETC, organised the fair to promote several employment opportunities in Europe.

Job Days play a key part of encouraging labour mobility, and therefore economic growth, in Europe. Areas of the world with a high degree of labour mobility are places with high economic growth. Europeans have traditionally been reluctant to move for work, even though mobility encourages better skills, better standards of living and a higher rate of economic growth, which benefits everyone. Job Days are designed to explain these benefits, to both employers and employees, and give them the opportunity to meet and talk to each other. Job Days also provide factual and unbiased information about moving to work in other countries in Europe. Last year, 200,000 people took part in the Job Days across Europe. Several hundreds visited the fair in Malta and a number of people were actually employed by foreign employers through the fair.

In this year’s edition of Job Days, the Maltese public had the opportunity to meet EURES advisers from other European countries, who provided all the necessary information on employment opportunities and the living conditions in their respective country. A number of information sessions on working and living in particular countries in Europe were held.

During the local fair, the public also had the chance to meet representatives from a number of leading organisations in Europe that have shown interest in employing Maltese nationals. Disneyland Resort Paris is looking for Maltese workers to work in various posts within Europe’s largest theme park. Through last year’s Job Days, Disneyland Resort Paris currently employs six Maltese nationals. Other organisations from Europe taking part in the fair were Christies Care to recruit carers in the UK, Uteach Ltd. to recruit teachers in the UK, Open Technology Services AS to recruit engineers and computer programmers in Greece and Dresser-Rand AS to recruit engineers on oil rigs in Norway. Local private employment agencies also took part in this fair.

The Job Days in Malta were managed by the Maltese EURES branch. EURES, set up in 1993, is a Europe-wide employment service that operates through the public employment services of European Union and European Economic Area Member States.

EURES has a human network of more than 750 EURES advisors across Europe who are in daily contact with jobseekers and employers. They are trained specialists who provide the three basic EURES services – information, guidance and placement, to both jobseekers and employers.

The EURES website carries on average over 1.2 million job vacancies, with 250,000 CVs and over 10,000 employers registered. Full details are available at http://eures.europa.eu or on www.euresmalta.com.

Anyone wishing to know more about employment opportunities in a European country, especially in the opportunities offered by the organisations mentioned above, are kindly asked to contact EURES on freephone 8007 6505 or by email at eures.etc@gov.mt.
