The Blood Bank has issued an urgent request for blood donors. The bank said that blood banks are low and there is now an urgent need for blood donations of all types, particularly O positive
Blood donation is sometimes taken for granted or ignored.
The more blood donors the better. When donating blood people are helping others and having the chance to help save lives.
The public is asked to donate blood as soon as possible at the Guardamangia centre which is open Monday to Sunday, from 8am until 6pm or at the Gozo General Hospital centre which is open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 11.30am.
It is important for donors to present their Maltese ID card, Maltese Driving License or Maltese Passport.
Donors should be between 18 years and 63 years; 17 year olds must have a parent/guardian consent. Regular donors above 63 years and under 68 years may donate, but the intervals between donations should not exceed 6 months. New donors above 63 years are not accepted.
Today, Sunday, the 7th of April is World Health Day and this year’s theme chosen by the World Health Organisation is ‘High Blood Pressure.’
The National Blood Transfusion Service said that anybody who wants to give blood and is taking blood pressure tablets, once the dose is established, they will then, as a general rule, be permitted to donate blood.
For more information please call the Guardamangia Centre on 22066220.
