e-residence cards under Ministry of Home Affairs & SecurityThe Ministry for Foreign Affairs said that it would like to clarify the situation concerning the replacing of identity cards for non-Maltese nationals resident in Malta, which process was initiated by the previous administration.

Whilst appreciating the inconvenience that the changes may have brought about to certain individuals, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to point out that this Ministry is no longer responsible for the running of the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs.

Following the General Election of 9th March 2013, the remit of this Department concerning these matters has been assigned to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Security.

Issues pertaining to the issuance of identity e-cards should be referred to the appropriate Ministry/Department for necessary action and follow-up.

Details on forms etc are available here.

The ‘e-Residence Card’ fiasco prominently features among the many comments appended to this recently launched online petition – “EU Commission: Stop the discrimination of EU Nationals in Malta” -:

I do hope that this isn’t the only statement on e-residence cards. This fiasco is not good for the image of the Maltese government within Malta or for Malta on the European stage. The current processing of this clearly isn’t working and someone needs to take a grip of it and explain to those affected how they can achieve e-residence without the worry and vast expenditure of time currently needed.
Whether the whole system is discriminatory is beyond me but in a community where there is supposed to be free movement of EU citizens it does seem a little odd …..

I wonder what they will do if I don’t bother. Perhaps they will stop taking the €10k + a year I give them in taxes and SS payments 😉
From what I hear they don’t bother replying to emails sent to them and it would be easier to get through to the Pope by phone than them!

its as clear as mud – we all know changes are required for this to be succesful and efficient…at this time its a plain and simple shambles and no doubt whatever the changes are – they will take time to arrange publicise notify and then take effect. Until then hang on to your hats and current identification. Freedom of movement is the mainstay of the EU s policy and it sure doesnt seem that way here

GOVERNMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO RESTRUCTURE ITSELF AS IT SEES FIT. HOWEVER THE E-RESIDENCE SYSTEM IS CAUSING UNNECESSARY STRESS ON APPLICANTS AS A RESULT OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION. THIS SITE SHOWS APPOINTMENTS CAN BE MADE BY EMAIL. SHORTCOMINGS IN THIS ROUTE HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED BY DCEA WHO HAVE ADVISED APPOINTMENTS BY LETTER ARE ACCEPTABLE. WE HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD CURRENT ID CARDS WILL BE VALID TO END NOV 2013. THE MHAS SITE CONTRADICTS THIS (END MAR2013). DCEA HAVE CLEARLY DONE THE MATHIS AND FOUND IT IS GOING TO TAKE CONSIDERABLY LONGER TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS THAN WAS ORIGINALLY ENVISAGED.

CAN AFFECTED PEOPLE PLEASE HAVE A DEFINITIVE STATEMENT RATHER THAN ALL THIS CONFUSION. IF MHAS HOLD THE RESPONSIBILITY NOW LET THEM PROVIDE SUCH A STATEMENT BUT PLEASE GET THEM TO ALSO DO THE MATHS. MANY HAVE SUUGESTED THIS EXERCISE COULD GO INTO 2015 / 6.

    7. David Reiling says:

its easy to do the maths and I fail to see how anyone no matter who is in power couldnt fo this. the maths is quite simple on EU nationals alone – 25000 at 60 processed per day at three days per week equates to 138 weeks – assuming current staffing and resources dont change – thus completion by the end of 2015.

    8. David Reiling says:

thats not counting the new arrivals who will be needing to do the same – this could well go into 2016 quite easily.
