The first race in Qala was a success. We had 51 runners and 62 total participants. I thank GozoNews for posting this event and all the sponsors, the runners, the parents for Marshaling and the event and encouraging their kids to run, and the other helpers and the Local Council for helping to do this event. I encourage kids & Youths to get out of the house and go out and run and cycle on the roads of Gozo. I wish we could have more help from the Government; we are so behind when it comes to Athletics. Please, I ask the Minister of Gozo to help these kids in Gozo. They need better facilities for training. Malta has a school totally dedicated to educating and encouraging young athletes. It isn’t really feasible for most Gozitan families to send their children to attend (it’s in Kirkop), ( although one family Gozitan does). When I train the kids on the track, we share space with the horses (in Xewkija). I also would like to suggest one thing that would bring more Athletes to Gozo- if Maltese participants in athletic events were given a discount rate and only had to pay the Gozitan rate for the ferry I think more people would come. If you talk to clubs in Malta they do say that the expense is too much – over 4 euro per person and over 15euro with a car- so it’s too expensive for them to come to do a race here in Gozo. I think there are changes that can be made to improve the level of competition here- for sure more runners and cyclists from Malta would participate if it were more affordable. Thanks to everyone ” Gozo-Greyhounds “
