As part of the celebrations for Jum il-Belt Victoria, which falls on the 10th of June, the Victoria Local Council is organising a number of activities in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the conferral of the City Status to Rabat.
It was on this very day, in 1887, that a Government Notice announced that Her Majesty Queen Victoria had been graciously pleased to consent to the town of Rabat being officially declared a City and its name changed into Victoria, as a lasting remembrance of the fiftieth anniversary of her accession to the throne of the British Empire.
On a very windy Thursday evening the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra presented a grand concert of Spectacular Symphonic Classics, in Independence Square, in front of the historic Banca Giuratale, which is nowadays the official seat of the Victoria Local Council. The Leader was Marcelline Aguis and Conductor Colin Attard.
The Programme of music was as follows:
Mussorgsky – Night on a Bare Mountain
Sibelius – Finlandia op 26
Borodin – Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor
Chabrier – Espana
Liszt – Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture op 49.
Photographs – Alain Salvary.
