The Gozo University Group said this morning that it welcomes the news of the prioritisation of alternative forms of accessibility between Gozo and Malta and neighbouring islands, which was announced at the public consultation meeting held at the Ministry for Gozo on Thursday, headed by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo.
GUG continued by saying that it “backs the Government’s intention to issue calls for expression of interest for the operation of a scheduled air service and a catamaran service between Malta and Gozo. It believes that these would facilitate the life of the Gozitan students, youths and workers. This would also help create an influx of social and economic benefits for both islands.”
On the other hand, GUG said it “expresses its concern regarding a feasibility study for a bridge or tunnel between the islands, which should not only consider the viability of these in terms of their economical and environmental effects but also take note of their social and cultural effect.”
“GUG believes that priorities should be retained, such as the air link and the fast boat, while it believes that the feasibility studies should also focus on the situation of Gozo after the introduction of these services and that the need for a tunnel or bridge is still to be considered, the statement concluded.
Oh my God, this has to rate as the stupidest thing I have read yet on this subject. The Gozo University Group backs the Government’s intention to issue calls for expression of interest for the operation of a scheduled air service and a catamaran service and states that It believes that these would facilitate the life of the Gozitan students, youths and workers. Whilst that may be true of a catamaran service between Malta and Gozo I doubt very much if Gozitan students, youths and workers are going to be queuing up to use an air link to Malta. Perhaps they imagine the service is going to be free and that dozens of little planes are going to be lined up to transport them 12 at a time to school or work. Get real!
Air service will be for the birds. A 10 to 20 seat aircraft will not solve any problems. A catamaran service Valletta-Bugibba-Gozo will be a blessing to students, Gozitans who work in Malta and also to Maltese and foreign tourists.
i can not understand why we don’t have a regular ferry or catamaran service to valletta,
i would like to bet half the people who cross the channel are either going or coming from gozo / valletta,
