The Gozo University Group said that it would like to express its full support of Malala Yousafzai’s campaign in favour of the development of education for women and girls in countries in dire need of improvement in this aspect.
As a student organisation, GUG said it believes in equal opportunity for all those entitled to an education and this holds true both in Malta and Gozo and across borders around the globe.
GUG pointed out that on a national level, it feels “that while Malta’s educational system is of a redeemable quality, various obstacles remain and must be tackled and overcome. The most pressing of these is the need for a stronger outreach of educational institutions, particularly at the tertiary levels, in specific regions of our country – mainly Gozo and Cottonera – until good education is accessible for all.
“In addition, more needs to be done to minimise the problem of lilliteracy in essential subjects such as science, languages and social sciences.”
GUG concluded by saying that it is positive that with effort and dedication, a future for those investing in education can in time become a certainty.
I think the GUG should have added their voice to those organizations and individuals who have expressed themselves against the repatriation of irregular migrants without granting them the right to apply for asylum. The GUG should explain why it chose to highlight the lack of education opportunities for women in Pakistan and Afghanistan but stayed mum on an issue much closer to home. In fact, none of the Maltese student organizations uttered a word on the issue : just imagine what would have happened if anyone had tried to tamper with the sacred stipends.
