During a courtesy visit to the German Ambassador Klaus-Peter Brandes to Malta, the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Climate Change, Leo Brincat announcet that during the month of September an information campaign will take place on air cleaner, which will be in preparation for Car Free Day, which this year will be held on Sunday, the 22nd of September.

The Minister said that while Malta is keen to strengthen its cooperation in the environmental field with the German Government, particularly with regard to clean air, he pointed out that the Government faces three key factors which push it towards that direction.

“First the fact that this area is among the most worrying for Maltese and Gozitan citizens. The fact that this year is the European year dedicated to air and the fact that the Government’s electoral mandate is to strengthen the efforts of our country in this field.”

Dr Brincat said that the issue of air quality was rising to the top of the agenda of European Ministers of the Environment. At the same time it is being strongly pushed by the environmental directive to strengthen it, to not only improve air quality, but to ensure there is more effective protection in the field of environmental health. Saying that he is comforted by the fact that for all this there is also the support of a number of scientists across Europe.

The Minister added that it is “important to the country to identify problems and negative effects in this area to be able to proceed to the stage where we have the means to address them effectively.”

He augured a broad cooperation with Germany in other areas such as climate change and sustainable development. He pointed out that Germany has very effective structures in these and other areas related to the environmental sector including the German Federal Environment Agency.
