Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo, has emphasised the importance of parent empowerment during a press conference this afternoon. He said that he believes the role of parents in education is essential and wants to see them involved in important strategies such as the National Literacy Strategy, which was launched recently.

“International studies show parent empowerment, teaching and learning are linked. Research also showed that long-term benefits were achieved when family-literacy programmes targeted the development of parents’ educational support skills as well as their socio-emotional support skills. In light of this, the Ministry for Education and Employment will encourage parents to develop such skills.”

The Minister also said that in order to ensure active participation has its desired results, parents and guardians had to take an active role in school life. At every turn, Heads of School should involve parents in decision-making.

Stakeholders are urged to voice their suggestions on this initiative on the email address mede@gov.mt.
