The Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Roderick Galdes, as a commemoration to “World Animal Day,” which is celebrated on the 4th of October, launched a competition aimed at both Primary and Secondary school children.

Through this campaign, children will be encouraged to give their insight on the field of animal protection.The competition was launched at St Margaret Primary, Zabbar. Primary dhildren are encouraged to design a means for the protection and respect of animals, Secondary students, from Form 1 to Form 3 must write an essay of about 250 words on the experience of an animal that was saved by the Animal Welfare Department.

Children with the best three designs and three essays will be presented with a tablet. Furthermore, the best essays will be published in a book and then distributed to schools.The competition is open until the 25th of October 2013 and children can send their submissions to welfare.msdec@gov.mt, while schools can contact Lorna Schembri on lorna.schembri@gov.mt.

The Parliamentary Secretary also announced that schools will begin rewarding the student who does most works for the protection of animals.

The student will be awarded a shield during the school prize day or school concert. Children of St Margaret Primary, in recognition of this day, brought food and old uniforms which they dontated to Animal Welfare Department for animals to use in winter to sleep on.
