Positive Budget, but does not address income tax inequality – Communist Party

The Communist Party of Malta said that it views the 2014 Budget “as a positive one, but could have been more socially just if the income tax measure was one that benefits all, together with an increase in the minimum wage.”

“Reduction in energy prices, free child-care centers, incentives to create new jobs, tax reduction on part-time employment and tax incentive to first time buyers are all positive measures,” the Party said.

“On the other hand,” the Party added it “insists that the Government could have been more socially just if the income tax policy was one that benefits all levels of society. Adjustment of the tax ceiling regime, instead of just reducing the income tax rate for high earners was the way forward for a just and equal society. The high tax rate reduction from 32% to 29% is an anti-social measure.”

“Other positive measures announced are the measures to increase investment in education, health and those benefitting the disabled, pensioners and students,” The Communist Party of Malta concluded-
