As winter is approaching and people start using heaters around the house, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) is advising consumers to check the gas regulator they have installed to their gaseous appliances.

The MCCAA said that consumers are urged to ensure that, if their regulators have been installed for a number of years, these regulators are still in good working order. The manufacturers’ instructions should be studied to remove regulators which have surpassed their expected lifetime as detailed by the manufacturer. Any such regulators should be replaced as soon as possible.

Moreover, one should also talk to one’s relatives and neighbours, especially older people, to ensure that the gas regulator installed is adequate and does not pose a serious risk.

The Authority also advises economic operators to ensure that the regulators they place on the market satisfy two important requirements, namely that these: a) comply to EN 12864, and b) are suitable for use on lpg, the type of gas supplied in Malta.

MCCAA also reminds consumers that should they encounter any problem with the cylinders and/or valves, they should immediately contact the pertinent operator whose contact details are required by law to be imprinted on the gas cylinders.
