Despite the inclement weather and heavy rain, a short ceremony was held this morning at the foyer of the Banca Giuratale in Victoria, as part of the Remembrance Day activities popularly known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day.

The ceremony was presided by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo and Mrs M. Refalo, together with representatives of cultural organisations, war veterans and members of the British Legion.

The commemoration was ably presented by Mr Charles Abela Mizzi who gave a beautiful rendering of Frankie Mercieca’s poem ‘Il-Monument ta’ Kristu Re’ followed by a march past by the Gozitan Platoon of the Armed Forces of Malta and the sounding of the Last Post.

As the Citadel clock struck the eleventh hour a minute of silence was observed followed by the sounding of the Last Post and the Reveille.

Wreaths were then laid at the foot of Christ the King monument by Gozo Minister Dr Anton Refalo and representatives of various cultural committees, war veterans, members of the British Legion and other distinguished guests who gathered at Independence Square, Victoria to honour soldiers who died during World War I and World War II.

I would like to know where the British Legion presence on Gozo is please?

    2. George Palmer says:

So would I. I bought a poppy on the ferry, so it’s probably on Malta.

    3. Mick Cundy says:

Poppies have been on sale in Gozo post offices and RBL attend the ceremony but as far as I am aware there is no fixed presence on the island. (Hence my question.) I had to change my membership to St James’s Branch London for ‘holding’.

There was a very active Branch until a couple of years ago. I know that Malta RBL would appreciate a Gozo Branch reforming. Any takers?
