Charging points for electric cars, which are currently being installed in various localities in Malta and Gozo, will be available for us free of charge for a period of one year.

This was announced by the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo during a press conference held recently at the Citadel. He added 15 charging points will be installed in Gozo, one of which is front of the Ministry for Gozo, in St Francis Square, while Malta will have another 75 installed in different locations across the islandThe Ministry for Gozo is a partner with the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure, in EU LIFE+ DemoEV Project, their purpose is to promote the use of electric powered cars, to enable Malta to achieve the Climate Change and Energy Target by 2020 for over 5,000 electric powered vehicles.

As part of this project, the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure has transferred one of the fleet of electric powered vehicles for the use of the Gozo Ministry.

The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Joe Mizzi, said that road transport accounts for almost 17.0% of the emissions generated in Malta, “an alarming and unacceptable figure and therefore, it is the purpose of this Government to undertake to make transport more sustainable in our country and get lower air pollution.”

On his part, the Minister for Gozo said the Government is committed to drive forward the socio -economic development of Gozo, while also ensuring sustainable development.

Dr Refalo stressed how the Gozo Ministry is committed to achieving eco-Gozo environmental targets, to reduce emissions and smoke. He added that these kinds of initiatives will further help Gozo to have a cleaner environment.
