The annual Epiphany Concert was held recently at the Gozo Cathedral, hosted by the Gozo Cultural Committee in collaboration with the Cathedral Chapter.

The Classique Orchestra, under the musical direction of Maestro Joseph Debrincat, entertained the audience that filled the Gozo Cathedral with a varied programme of music of both festive and classic. The concert also featured two Gozitan sopranos, Claudia Tabone and Rosabelle Pavia.

The orchestra, leader David Lang, started the evening with a dazzling medley of Christmas carols, followed by such classics as Adeste Fidelis, Mille Cherubini in Coro by Alois Melichar, a Fastasia on Greensleves by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Tu scendi dalle Stelle by Alfons Maria de’ Liguori, and Gesù Bambino by Pietro Yon.

The intermezzo followed, from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Bells across the Meadows, which Albert W.Ketelbey composed, having been inspired by the churches’ bells while he was in Gozo during the First World War.

The programme continued with the very popular White Christmas by Irving Berlin and A Holy Night y Adolphe Adam.

The Sinfonia Pastorale by Emanuele Galea and edited by Joseph Debrincat, was warmly received by the audience.

A Christmas Festival of Songs concluded the pleasant evening. The conductor, orchestra, and singers received a standing ovation, and they responded with an encore of the concluding piece.
