The Traffic Branch of Malta Police in co-ordination with Transport Malta are affecting daily inspections within various areas in order to curb abuse by drivers using foreign registered vehicles.

So far14 vehicles bearing foreign registration have been impounded, among which were British and Italian registered vehicles.

The Police pointed out that the Law stipulates that imported vehicles with a foreign registration cannot be used on the roads and have to be registered with TM within 20 days.

This registration with TM needs to be carried out within twenty (20) days from the motor vehicle’s arrival in Malta.

During this period of twenty (20) days, the imported used motor vehicle or a used motor vehicle may only be used on the road in Malta in the following cases:

1. from the port of entry to the place where it is to be garaged until it is so registered and licensed;

2. to and from a garage for repairs thereon if the vehicle, on inspection, fails the roadworthiness test if that vehicle has a valid registration, carries the registration plate issued in the country where it had previously been registered and is covered by an insurance policy;

3. if the vehicle carries a “Trial Run” plate issued by TM under specific conditions.

“Vehicles found on the roads after this period are being towed away and kept at the TM premises. Drivers can face a fine of 30 Euros by the TM and will be charged in Court,” the Police said.
