“The best option for people who wanted to see an improvement in job prospects and living conditions was to support socialist parties across Europe in the May elections for the European Parliament. This of course includes Malta.”

Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant, said this while addressing a social activity attended by hundreds of well wishers at the Dolmen Hotel, Bugibba. Alfred Sant said that all over Europe people were asking whether the European Union could make a difference for the better in their lives.

Alfred Sant said that, “in recent years, it seemed to be making a difference for the worse, with all the programmes it has launched to induce austerity, not least by cutting jobs and welfare benefits. If things were to stay unchanged following the May elections, more austerity could be expected.”

Dr Sant, who is contesting the European Parliament Elections in May, said that more and more decisions that deeply affect the lives of Maltese families are being taken by the European Union in Brussels. “Not enough people are realising this, which is one of the reasons why many people may not be giving enough attention to the high stakes attached to the European Parliament elections due in May.”

Alfred Sant urged the hundreds present to pass the message to their friends and relatives to go and vote on 24 May to choose their representatives in the European Parliament.
