Update: A 30 year-old Polish national has lost his life after he fell into the sea in the limits of Dwejra,
The Police said that the incident happened at around 3.40pm this afternoon. The AFM advised that at 4.09pm its Operations centre was informed by the Gozo Police that a foreign national was reported missing in the area off the Azure Window in Dwejra, Gozo.
The AFM Operations centre immediately dispatched an AFM Alouette III helicopter to the area. It was assumed that the missing person was carried into the sea due to inclement weather conditions.
Following an extensive search in the area by members of the Civil Protection Dept, the Gozo Police and the AFM helicopter crew, the person was spotted adrift out at sea.
The AFM helicopter recovered the unconscious foreign man by winching him on land close by where an awaiting ambulance rushed to Gozo’s General Hospital.
The man was subsequently declared dead at the Gozo General Hospital .
The Duty Magistrate has appointed an inquiry into the case.
