The arch of Portes de Bombes is being lit green for five consecutive days in commemoration of St Patrick’s Day, as Malta joins with various other countries around the world to participate in an initiative entitled ‘Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening 2014’ through the greening of iconic sites.

The arch of Portes de Bombes has been identified and logistical preparations were underway in the past days to turn this historic monument into a green iconic site. Portes de Bombes is currently being lit green till next Monday on the occasion of St Patrick’s Day.

Various countries including Australia, United States of America, China, South Africa, Austria, Germany, Dubai and United Kingdom are amongst those which have joined this initiative to ‘green’ their respective iconic sites.

These include the Sydney Opera House, the London Eye, the Empire State Building in New York and Niagara Falls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Burj Al Arab, Table Mountain, and Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It is estimated that some 100 iconic sites are being lit together in green over these five days.

This simple act of ‘greening’ these icons on the same historic day creates a powerful wave of connectedness, linking communities across the world whilst leading a compelling visual spectacle and attracts global tourists to these iconic sites.

The initiative originated in Ireland two years ago and forms part of a publicity campaign to promote tourism in Ireland.

Ireland Ambassador to Malta H.E Jim Hennesy warmly congratulated Tourism Minister Karmenu Vella for this initiative in Malta which will further give added exposure to one of Malta’s historical iconic sites.
