Bank of Valletta has renewed its support towards the Dinja Wahda programme which is run by Birdlife Malta across most of the Primary Schools in Malta and Gozo. The agreement was signed by Steve Mickewright, Executive Director of BirdLife Malta and Michael Galea, Chief Officer Operations at Bank of Valletta.

The signing of the agreement was held at the Ghadira Nature Reserve in Mellieha. The two parties were accompanied by their respective mascots, Cikkurillu the Maltese lizard for Bank of Valletta and the Huttafa for Birdlife Malta.

The relationship between Bank of Valletta and BirdLife Malta dates back to 2007, when Bank of Valletta took up the role of the educational partner for this Programme which provides a practical guide to introducing children to the flora and fauna found in the Maltese countryside. This guide presents the green environment and its safekeeping in a very child-friendly manner, making it accessible to children of different age groups.

“The Dinja Wahda” project has grown significantly over the past years, and the Guide has continued to feature with more prominence across Primary Schools,” said Mr Galea.

“We are delighted to extend our partnership with Birdlife Malta in this program – an initiative that is part of the environmental and educational initiatives undertaken by the Bank under its Community Programme. BOV is committed to play an active role in the management and administration of this programme that is successfully raising awareness of the importance of being a good corporate citizen. Bank of Valletta is committed to safeguard the green stakeholder, not only by taking environmental-friendly measures in its day-to-day operations, but also by helping educate the younger generation in taking an active role towards its safekeeping,” said Michael Galea.

Steve Micklewright thanked Bank of Valletta for its continued support, saying, “The strong partnership between Bank of Valletta and BirdLife Malta helps to ensure that Dinja Wahda continues to inspire and educate our children about the natural world. As the future custodians of the environment, it is so important that we ensure our children have an appreciated for the world around them.”

The Dinja Wahda Guide provides teachers with a range of environmental activities to choose from. Every activity carries points according to the level of commitment required. The guide is reinforced by the school coordinator, Denise Falzon, who visits participating schools throughout the academic year to guide teachers and keep a record of their progress. At the end of the scholastic year a Gold, Silver or Bronze award is presented to the participating schools, according to their level of merit.
