Main parties’ long standing position on spring hunting is a main reason for the 44,000 signature petition to abolish it, the Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting (CASH) said today.

“Both political parties have now made statements in Parliament about their positions in favour of spring hunting. Such statements confirm the actions taken by various Governments for many years.”

CASH added that “in light of these statements, the Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting confirms that it was public indignation due to the persistent ignoring of their wishes with regard to spring hunting and the constant caving of both political parties to pressure from a small but very vociferous hunting lobby, that has led to a large section of the population calling for the final decision on spring hunting to be directly placed in the hands of the electorate through a referendum. This will be a historic first.”

Coalition spokesperson Rodolfo Ragonesi said, “now that both parties in Parliament have accepted the principle of the referendum on spring hunting and have made their respective positions clear, they should truly respect the independent decision of the people without exerting undue party influence. They should allow both sides of the debate on spring hunting to conduct their own information campaigns without allowing the issue to be taken over by party politics.”
