The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), through an Emergency Conservation Order (ECO) said that it has temporarily extended the Class A schedule boundary which protects the Ta’ Hagrat Neolithic Temples in Mgarr.

“This is the highest level of protection an archaeological site can be granted.”

The Emergency Conservation Order which covers an extended area of land in the vicinity of the temples also includes the parcel of land which Government intends to expropriate. The Authority issued the Emergency Conservation Order after it was asked by the Government to consider using this planning mechanism to protect these temples from any nearby development.

Through the Emergency Conservation Order, which has a validity period of 6 months, further studies can be carried out before this area can be classified as a Class A scheduled area. During this 6 month period no development may proceed on any site within the boundary.

The Ta’ Hagrat and Skorba Temples in Mgarr where granted a Class A scheduling by MEPA in October 1998.
