A small earthquake swarm consisting of at least 6 events occurred yesterday, 21st May, at approximately 40km southeast of Malta. The swarm was well recorded and located by the Seismic Monitoring and Research Unit (SMRU) of the University of Malta.

The largest event had a magnitude of 3.8 and occurred at 06:13 local time. It was followed by 5 smaller shocks throughout the morning, SMRU said.

Such occurrences of earthquake swarms are relatively common in the region around the Maltese islands, an important recent one having occurred on Easter Sunday 2011, when more than 15 events were recorded over a three-day period, SMRU said.
