The Committee for National and Regional Celebrations, together with the Department of Culture within the Ministry for Gozo, in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council, are organising a ceremony to commemorate the Maltese victims during the 7th June 1919 riots. riots with a programme of activities.

These riots were the result of various unpopular measures taken by the British who were ruling the nation at that time. One of the victims was Guzeppi Bajada, born in Xaghra.

The Sette Giugno Commemoration will take place on Friday the 6th of June 2014, and the programme is as follows:

9.00am: At the Xaghra Basilica and Collegiate Church, Celebration of Holy Mass led by Xaghra Archpriet Mgr Carmelo Refalo and animated by organist Ivan Attard. Children from Xaghra Primary School will also participate.

10.00am: A commemorative ceremony in front of Guzeppi Bajada’s monument in Bullara Street, Xaghra Gozo. There will be the playing of the Last Post and the Reveille followed by the laying of wreaths in front of the monument.

Those entities and other NGOs who wish to lay wreaths are kindly being requested to inform the Department of Culture in Gozo.

11.00am: At Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria, there will be the official inauguaration of a monument commemorating the victims and all Gozitans who were involved in the events which led to the Sette Giugno riots.

The monument will be inaugurated by H.L. Mgr Dr. Joe Vella Gauci, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to Malta for UNESCO and President of the Committee for National and Regional Celebrations.
