At the beginning of summer, the Diocesan Youth Commission (KDZ) together with the Commission for Peace and Justice, the Commission for Pastoral Activities among Workers and the National Youth Council (KNZ), in a joint statement said that they would like to put forward some recommendations in favour of young people.

They said that these suggestions address not only youth, but also and especially those with their direct responsibility: parents, youth leaders and private and state entities.

“In Malta, summertime offers the young the freedom to develop their personalities. This season gives adolescents and young people more opportunities in their discovery of life through leisure, relationships, creativity, faith/spirituality, work and family life.

“While these provide an important space for growth, they also demand true consideration; by young people on one hand, and by mature relatives, employers and those who influence them, on the other,” the statement said.

“With this in mind, we would like to draw attention to the following three points”:

– Seasonal work: “A number of young people (Maltese and foreign) make their first work experience through summer jobs. It is, therefore, important that in this transition from school to work they are treated with dignity: by receiving a just pay, enjoying wholesome conditions, and integrating quickly and fully. The engagement of minors disrespects this phase of a person’s life.

– Quality time: Youth in itself brings a special time in family life, even though this period is full of challenges. Summer is an opportunity for the family to spend more time together. The treasure of being in the company of family members should be a priority for young people as well as for parents.

– Season of Entertainment: The entertainment sector grants youth their due recess and the occasion to discover the joy of living with other youth in a healthy environment. We appeal against exploitation of young people by this sector, particularly with regards to the consumption of addictive substances, in places that are not fit for adolescents and/or young people.”

The statement concluded, “we forward these recommendations on behalf of youth, that this season will offer what’s best for them. We encourage the young to seek opportunities in voluntary service, sports, arts, leisure, groups that welcome them in the best way possible, and dignifying work that will give them a rewarding experience, both now and in their future.”
