The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing Dr Justyne Caruana has officially opened the extension of Casa Arches, Mosta.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that the Government has committed to increase community services to facilitate independent living. She explained how the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing is in discussions to continue increasing quality services within the community.

Also present for the ceremony was the Minister for Family and Social Solidarity, Michael Farrugia, who announced that the Government was identifying property from the Housing Authority to develop as a residence for disabled people.

The Minister spoke about the fact that the older population is increasing in Malta, which is resulting in an increase in demand for care and beds for the elderly.

Minister Farrugia said that work is ongoing to identify those interested in investing in this sector, so when applying for tenders they know what the Government expects.

He added that the Government is committed to reducing precarious working conditions for staff who work with the elderly and disabled persons.

Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana said that work is being done with all stakeholders so that the elderly have quality of life. She said that being elderly does not mean that you cannot contribute, because there is always a reason to contribute to society.
