Speaking at the National Sport Conference on Saturday, Alternattiva Demokratika’s spokesperson on Disability Issues and Sport, Dr. Clare Azzopardi Lane, stated the importance of sports being accessible to all.

Dr. Azzopardi said, “physical education teachers need to be trained in areas like sports for people with disability as they will be working in inclusive schools. The importance of training sport coaches specifically as coaches for people with disability is nowadays also a requirement.”

Concentrating on environmental issues, AD’s spokesperson said that cycling should be given more importance and support, and road safety and education campaigns should be ongoing.

Adding that it also believes the sport facilities should gradually be converted into using renewable energy and new facilities should be built in a sustainable manner.

Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof Arnold Cassola, said: “Sports as a formative exercise in health and character is a must for our country. A healthier population through sports will eventually contribute to the formation of athletes who will excel and make our country proud in international competitions.”
