Update 3: Enemalta engineers and technicians are working to restore electricity supply to all areas in Malta and Gozo following a power outage caused by a fault at the Delimara Power Station.

At approximately 7.50pm, one of the generating units at the Delimara Power Station tripped, causing a disruption of supply from all the other units.

Enemalta’s electricity generation and distribution sections are currently working to gradually restore supply to all areas affected. All areas are expected to be reconnected to the grid within the next few hours.

Enemalta said that it regrets any inconvenience caused.

Update: Power started to be restored in Gozo at about 10.30pm but unfortunately the power went off again after a few minutes.

Enemalta said that as engineers continue working to restore electricity supply to all areas in Malta and Gozo, Civil Protection Department and Enemalta Fire Section personnel have now managed to control the flames and eliminate risks of further damages at the distribution centre at Marsa.

“During the switching operation to re-energise all localities, at around 2245hrs, supply to all areas was temporarily interrupted again. However, it immediately started being restored.

Enemalta said that the initial outage was caused at 1950hrs by a fault at one of the generating units at the Delimara Power Station and an explosion in part of an electricity distribution centre at the Marsa Industrial Estate.

No one was injured in this incident. Police, Civil Protection Department and Enemalta Fire Section personnel, along with other Enemalta workers managed to extinguish the flames and contain the risk of further damages to the equipment at this installation by 2300hrs. Enemalta regrets any inconvenience caused.

Police investigations and Enemalta inquiries are now underway.

Power in Gozo once again started to be restored shortly after midnight.

Update 3: Enemalta said that supply was restored to almost all localities by 0130hrs early on Wednesday morning (today). Enemalta workers are currently carrying out emergency repair works to re-energise the sections of the grid supplied by the distribution centre at Marsa. These include parts of the following localities; Birzebbugia, Corradino, Floriana, Hal Farrug, Luqa, Marsa, Qormi, Siggiewi, Tarxien, Valletta and Zebbug.

While police investigations are now underway, Enemalta has also launched internal inquiries to identify the cause of the explosion at the distribution centre and the supply disruption, assess the damages caused and identify measures that may need to be implemented to avoid similar difficulties in the future.

Enemalta gave thanks to all its employees, the Police, the Civil Protection Department and employees and officials from several other entities who worked throughout the night to respond to this emergency and restore electricity supply in the shortest time possible. It would also like to thank its customers and the general public for their support following this incident.

Enemalta said that it regrets any inconvenience caused and reiterates its commitment to the continued investment in its generation and distribution systems to increase flexibility and minimise the risk of similar disruptions.
