The Gozo Diocese of Gozo has launched the official logo of the celebrations of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its establishment. Pope Pius IX through the Bull Singulari Amore – With utmost love, from the first two words of the document – established the diocese of Gozo on the 16th of September 1864.
The first Bishop of the new diocese, which also includes the tiny island of Comino, was Mons. Michael Francis Buttigieg, from Qala, then the Archpriest of Rabat.
The logo, designed by Fr Roberto Gauci, shows the boat of Peter, an old symbol of the Church in the Christian tradition, its sail in the form of the Cross. Also appearing alongside the boat are the three hills, the emblem of Gozo.
Anniversary celebrations are expected to be spread over a year, and officially open on Tuesday, the 16th of September 2014, the anniversary, with a Concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving at 7.00pm led by Bishop. Mario Grech at the Cathedral of the Assumption, which also celebrates the one hundred and fiftieth year as the Diocesan Bishop’s Seat. In Gozo churches there will be solemn adoration all day, ending at 6.00pm.
A more detailed programme of celebrations and initiatives that the Church in Gozo will be taking to commemorate such an historic event will be published later.
