The Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Chris Fearne, has announced that a total €5 million in European funds will be spent on new technologically advanced equipment for the Gozo General Hospital.

The announcement was made during the ceremony for the Gozo Hospital Worker of the Year Award 2013, held on Friday evening, which was won by Bernardette Piscopo, a nurse in the female ward, who has worked at the hospital for the last 30 years.

Mr Fearne said that the strategic plan of the Government was to raise the level of health in Gozo, transforming it into a dignified hospital with new services available for Gozitan patients.

Following the opening of the Day Care Unit in July, approximately 400 patients have benefited from this service, and there was a zero waiting list of patients for the services offered by the bone density unit, the Parliamentary Secretary said.

The Parliamentary Secretary thanked The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, the Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, Dr Justyne Caruana and the Chairman of the Strategic Leadership Board at GGH, Dr Franco Mercieca, for their collaboration, and especially the Gozo General Hospital employees who ultimately work to ensure that Gozo offers the highest level of care, with the strategy of workers who put a patient first.

The Team of the Year Award for 2013 was presented during the ceremony to the Hyperbaric Unit Team at GGH.
