Bishop of Gozo appoints Fr Tony Sciberras as Rector of the Major Seminary

The Bishop of Gozo Mario Grech, has appointed to the Rev. Fr Tony Sciberras MSSP, SThD, as Rector of the Major Seminary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Fr Sciberras, who will enter office on the 1st of January 2015, will be the successor of Rev. Fr. Daniel Xerri, SThD, who was Rector of the Seminary for the past seven years.
Fr Sciberras will be the 31st Rector of the Major Seminary of the Diocese of Gozo, which was inaugurated on the 4th of November 1866.
Over the 148 years since its establishment, the Seminary has been the home of formation for more than 600 Gozitan priest and a number of priests from Malta. Since the 13th of April 1994, the Major Seminary is affiliated with the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome, and the seminarians who successfully complete the theological course receive the Bachelor in Theology from this University.
Fr Tony Sciberras MSSP aged 62, was ordained on the 9th of July 1978, after completing a theology course at St. Thomas College, St. Dominic, Rabat, Malta. He continued his studies at the Gregorian University in Rome, where in 1982 he obtained a license in Spiritual Theology.
In 1989 he obtained Diploma Postulaturi Congregation of the Causes of Saints in 2005 and a Doctorate in Theology of Consecrated Life from Rome.
Within the Missionary Society of St. Paul, Fr Sciberras was Prefect of Prenovizzi, Head of Novices, Moderator of students MSSP, Assistant General Superior, the Superior General Delegate for Malta, Provincial Bursar, Superior of Agatha’s in Rabat, and the Vice-Postulator of the Beatification Cause of Mons. Joseph De Piro.
He was also co-founder and member of the Centre for Religious Institutes (CIR) and the course coordinator and lecturer for CIR and INSERM. Is a visiting lecturer of Theology and Spiritual Theology of Consecrated Life at the University of Malta, and teaching the course of Consecrated Life in the Major Seminary of the Heart of Jesus, Gozo and a director of the Consecrated Life Institute (IHK).
Fr Sciberras was also a former Postulatur of the Beatification Cause of Maria Theresa Nuzzo, and for Father Michael Attard, Deputy Postulatur of the Beatification Causes of Mons. Joseph De Piro and Henry and Inez Casolani, and adviser of several other Beatification Causes. He is also an author of publications and studies on Mons. Joseph De Piro.
